Children’s Wish Foundation: Three Ways to Style a Black Gown
One of the greatest parts about being my own boss is that I have the freedom to choose where I spend my time. Although my schedule is usually pretty slammed and I travel an insane amount, I always try and find time to volunteer. Luckily, so many great causes use events as a way to raise money (from galas, fundraisers, fashion shows, intimate dinner etc) so it’s a great way to put my knowledge to good use and give back!
This year, I was so honored to have been asked to be a part of the committee for the Children’s Wish Foundation annual fundraising gala Night of Wonders along with some incredibly inspiring local professionals. I’ve been a longtime supporter of Children’s Wish and I’ve even helped grant some wishes, which was one of the most incredible experiences of my life! The mission of this Canadian organization is to work together with families of children with terminal illnesses to grant wishes to create a memorable experience for not only the children but their entire families. Of course when the committee chair asked if I’d lend my time and experience to help produce the event I said a resounding “Hell Yes!!”. The cost of granting a wish that will change a life forever is only $10,000. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can help or be involved click here.
As a planner, I’m always attending events (and I’m usually always working in some capacity) so I rarely ever wear anything other than black. Not only can you recycle a black dress more often but it’s always flattering and I find it’s more versatile! I wanted to share with you my top three tips for changing up the look of a black gown to re purpose for different events (recycling looks is also becoming more and more popular with celebrities on the red carpet so you get bonus points for saving money, the environment AND being on trend!)!
1. Change Up Your Jewelry
Adding a pop of color to your outfit is easy and inexpensive with different jewelry. Depending on the style you can easily get a vintage look, a rocker chic look or a minimal look just by opting for a different pair of earrings!
2. Opt For a Different Hair & Makeup Look
How you choose to style your hair and makeup can make a huge difference on your overall look. Whether you decide on a bombshell blowout with a smokey eye, a side-swept finger curl and a bold red lip or an elegant up-do and a classic makeup palette I guarantee you’ll look and feel so different even if you’re wearing the same gown.
3. Invest in New Accessories
Using a classic black gown as your canvas and accessorizing differently can also make a huge difference on how it looks. A few of my favorite options are adding a statement belt to a simple dress, adding a pop of color with an incredible clutch and using a bolero, pashmina or light jacket to add another element to your outfit and make it seemingly unrecognizable!
My friends at Wardrobe Apparel provided my outfit, check them out in store or online to see all of their incredible pieces, my clutch was lent to me by my friend and style guru Joshua Langston and my bracelet was purchased at The Cross. How do YOU switch up your looks? I’d love to hear from you!
